PEGGY LEVISON NOLAN | TALES IN THE GROUND GLASS: ADVENTURES OF A BADASS GRANDMA

Dina Mitrani Gallery is proud to present Peggy Levison Nolan's Tales in the Ground Glass: Adventures of a Badass Grandma opening with a reception for the artist on Thursday, September 12, 2013 at 7pm. This is Nolan’s third solo exhibition at the gallery and will be on view through October 25, 2013.
Capturing Life and its ordinary details in her photography, Nolan presents her recent work in a unique format, exhibiting small prints that hang side by side in a continuous flow. With her constant and conscious act of looking, she makes pictures that reveal the beauty in everyday scenes. Quotidian stills that normally go unnoticed are brought to light by Nolan’s frame, and the installation creates a visually compelling narrative reminiscent of a moving picture. This exhibition also includes hand made photo-books that the artist started to make with the birth of her first granddaughter 9 years ago. “I wanted Alice to know the world that she would live in with all its players, trick-or-treaters, pigeons flocking on sidewalks, sunrise over dust in a kitchen, and her huge adoring family.”
Nolan's work is included in collections such as the MOMA in New York, the San Francisco MOMA and the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington DC. Her work was recently acquired by the MOCA in North Miami and was part of a group show at the Harn Museum at the University of Florida. She participated in By and About Women, a portfolio of 10 photographs that included notable women
photographers such as Helen Levitt, Carrie May Weems and Mary Ellen Mark. She was a Photolucida Critical Mass finalist and a resident at LIghtwork in Syracuse. Nolan has received numerous grants and awards including the South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship and has been teaching photography at Florida International University for over 10 years. She raised seven children, has four grandchildren and another on the way.
